Older Rider Research
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, 2010
Older riders are of increasing concern in Queensland due to a recent increase in motorcycle rider fatalities in older age groups. This research drew on licensing, registration, offence and crash data for all riders in Queensland over two five-year periods, the financial years 1993–1998 and 2003–2008. Analysis was conducted on crash rates per active rider and licence holder, including analysis of the impact of cohort, ageing and environmental effects on road crashes, between the two decades. The research included surveys received from 1,592 randomly selected Queensland motorcycle riders; a second survey of 1,821 convenience sample respondents was analysed separately. Data analysis included principal components factor analysis where eight factors were shown to account for over 50% of the variance in responses to attitude and behaviour survey items. These factors were incorporated in a cluster analysis of motorcycle riders in Queensland that allowed us to identify four different types of rider.
Sober Driver Program
Corrective Services NSW, 2010
In 2006, ARTD was engaged to evaluate the NSW Sober Driver Program, an education program for repeat drink drivers. The evaluation included a quasi-experimental design to assess recidivism. In 2009, ARTD was engaged to revisit the 2006 analysis with longer follow-up periods and a new cohort of 2007 program participants. Survival analysis was used to assess recidivism.
Drink Drive Education Course
Northern Territory Government, 2007-2008
ARTD conducted an independent evaluation of the Northern Territory Drink Drive Education Course, analysing quantitative program data, and collecting qualitative data from service providers, clients and stakeholders. The project led to recommendations for program improvements.
Early Childhood Road Safety Education Program
NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, 2008 and 2004
In 2004, ARTD conducted an evaluation of the reach and implementation of the program using a state-wide survey of 3000 centres, 10 case studies and post-survey follow-up interviews. In 2008, ARTD again evaluated the program to inform future directions.
Sober Driver Program
NSW Corrective Services of NSW Safe Driver Working Party, 2004-2006
ARTD conducted an evaluation of a state-wide nine-week drink driver education program for recidivist drink drivers. The evaluation involved a before and after study of 400 participants (changes in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour), qualitative research with 100 participants, an analysis of recidivism data and interviews with 100 stakeholders from three key agencies responsible for delivering the program.
National Performance Indicators (NPIs)
Austroads, 2005
Austroads had accumulated 72 Performance Indicators to benchmark road system and member road authority performance in Australia and New Zealand. The review used the Delphi Technique to reduce these to a more meaningful set.
